I.Kabakov, “The Voice That is Getting Weaker” – Arte all’Arte, 1998
Bastione della Sapia
Colle Val d’Elsa
Along the external perimeter of the city walls there is a pillar of marble, almost completely basement, of which only the superior part is visible. The piece of art was made by the Ukrainian artist Ilya Kabakov, and on the top there is a bas-relif of an open book with this Italian text:
Ho sostenuto il tempio con la mia altezza
Il tempio è stato crudele e non resta di me che metà
Gli anni fuggiranno via e sarò totalmente coperta dalla terra
E tu, camminandomi sopra, non ti accorgerai neppure di me
[I substained the temple with my highness
The temple was cruel and remains just the half of me
Years will run away and I will be completely covered by ground
And you, walking on me, will never see me]
The work is collocated in the higher part of the city, a place forgotten by locals and tourists, from which the view opens to the Tuscan landscape and where you can see a busy street opposite to the idea of the good-old-times.
