Dometaia Archaeology Park presents a vast burial area, one of the most important in the ancient territory of Volterra. The necropolis, brought to light in the last quarter of the 19th century following the excavations by Bonaventura Chigi Zondadari, was the subject of systematic surveys conducted between 1972 and 2010, which revealed 56 burial sites spanning the mid 6th century B.C. to the early years of the 2nd century A.D. The types of tombs found bear witness to a diversified society, with aristocratic nuclei (complex chamber tombs) used as a burial place for many family generations, next to more modest, also single tomb structures (trench, rectangular niche and basin tombs).
